Better support for foster carers
• I THANK the Tribune for publicising Foster Care Fortnight from May 14-27 (Ready to join the care force? May 11). London, in particular, is very short of foster carers, which means that more than a fifth of foster children have to live outside the capital.
The Litten Tree Group was set up in 2005 to campaign for a more professional approach to foster care, together with full 24-hour support. It is with regret that Islington Council fails to provide that full support.
Recently, a mother of two Islington children was critically ill in hospital following complications after surgery and deemed by the doctors as unlikely to survive the weekend.
However, a decision to allow the children to make it to her bedside could not be made until the following Monday morning when social workers returned to work. Fortunately, the mother survived that weekend and the children did get to see her later that week before she, sadly, passed away.
The Litten Tree Group calls for the council to ensure foster carers are provided with full 24-hour support so instant decisions can be made in the best interests of the child at all times.
