Help save our parish centre
• WE have great concerns over St Joseph’s community centre in Highgate.
St Joseph’s Church hopes to build a retirement home for priests near the church. We have no problem whatsoever about that. The priests have worked very hard over the years.
But the church wants to demolish our centre and the car park to make way for houses to be built. St Joseph’s community centre was built by the people of the parish. Many Irish men built it free of charge. Thanks to those men, it is as great now as it was back in 1972.
St Joseph’s is always holding events, functions, toddlers’ groups and, every Friday afternoon, Irish dancing. Every second Wednesday we hold a tea dance for our older folk, who are currently on holiday in Co Wicklow for 10 days with Helen Spratt and Father Christopher Kelly, from St Joseph’s, who run the centre.
Whittington Hospital holds events at the centre every year to raise money for its wards so life can be a little more comfortable for the sick.
Every weekend the centre is well attended and there is a different band each week. I appeal to readers to sign the petitions that are being handed around by people helping us to save our parish centre.
