Rebels can save these homes
• I REGULARY hear that Lib Dem councillors are distressed at what is happening in adult social services with Care UK and in children’s services with the planned closure of children’s homes, and that they are busying themselves behind the scenes.
But is this really the case? I would argue not. These are the people who manipulated the rules in the council chamber to ensure the 24 opposition councillors had no seats on the ruling executive, whereas the 24-strong Lib Dems have all eight seats on it.
Look at what the Lib Dems have been responsible for: selling off elderly care homes to Care UK, the potential sale of the homecare service while letting private companies get away with murder, the excessive use of consultants at the council tax-payers’ expense, and the closure of three children’s homes.
It is time for those councillors who disagree with their party to stand and fight. They should put a motion to the next council meeting rejecting the plans to close the homes and to privatise homecare.
Let us see what they are made of. Those councillors should break with the Lib Dems and vote with the opposition to overturn the attacks on our most vulnerable citizens.
