Asbo threat for buying dud cigs
SMOKERS who buy counterfeit cigarettes in Holloway’s Nag’s Head area could be slapped with an Asbo. It is the latest in a line of get-tough measures by the Nag’s Head police team, led by Sergeant Stuart Simpson.
The squad chief has already masterminded a string of seizures and successful prosecutions against sellers who peddle cheap, fake cigarettes and tobacco in the area.
Now the threat of an Asbo hangs over anyone found buying the illicit smokes.
The initiative has been launched to coincide with the smoking ban, which comes into force on Sunday.
A police spokeswoman said: “We have given 37 customers warning letters warning them not to come back and buy the cigarettes. If those people are found to continue buying the cigarettes we would look to carry out enforcement. “If it was the case that despite numerous warnings someone continued to buy counterfeit cigarettes then an Asbo could be a consideration.”
