£7m building is borough’s first purpose-built primary in 30 years

ISLINGTON'S first new purpose-built primary school for 30 years was officially opened by Lib Dem leader Sir Menzies Campbell on Tuesday.
Pupils entertained guests with songs and dance, and released doves and balloons at the opening of New North Road Community School, off Essex Road.
A children’s centre for under-fives is to open at the £7.5 million school in September.
The name of the new school, with 395 pupils on its roll, was chosen by children at the old New North School, in Ecclesbourne Road, which is now closed.
Pupils worked closely with architects on designs for the brightly coloured new school.
Affordable housing, including homes for key workers such as teachers, has been provided adjacent to the school.
The housing development has 59 flats for affordable housing and 62 flats for private sale.
And to add a touch of green, an ecological garden is being created on the Dibden Triangle open space.
Councillor Ursula Woolley, Lib Dem executive member for children and young people, said: “New North School is a real boost for the community.
“The modern facilities and the children’s centre are great for families, and I’m proud that we’ve been able to provide new affordable housing next to the school as well.”

Lib Dem leader asks: is Brown in tune with country?

DURING his visit to Islington, Lib Dem leader Sir Menzies Campbell reiterated his party’s stance on accepting jobs in Labour Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s government.
Sir Menzies stressed: “We are an independent party looking for maximum votes for maximum seats at the next general election. To be invited to join an administration with which one has such profound disagreements would be entirely inappropriate.”
Asked what he thought of Mr Brown, he added: “No Chancellor has had as much influence on domestic policy as Brown. He was at the Cabinet table when civil liberties were eroded, when the decision to go to war was made. He has been a big part of the administration.
“What we need is not a change at the top but a change of direction. Mr Brown has waited a long time for this opportunity but the question is: does he have a real sense of what the country now needs?”
