Mother pleads for return of children taken into care
AN Islington mother fighting to get her two daughters back after they were taken into care received two heartbreaking Christmas cards from the girls this week. The cards – eight months late – were lovingly drawn last December by the children, who have not seen their mother for two years.
Their messages read: “Mum you are the best…” and “To mum I miss you, I love you and I hope to see you…”
Islington social services took the children, aged 11 and eight, into care three years ago amid allegations of abuse. Since then, their mother has been desperately pleading for the return of her children. She has the support of her GP.
The council’s Labour opposition deputy leader, Councillor Richard Greening, is demanding that she receive letters from her children.
It was thanks to Cllr Greening’s intervention that she finally received the two Christmas cards. The cards had apparently not been posted by social services.
Cllr Greening said: “I don’t understand why the letters from her children are not being sent to her. It seems very cruel and unreasonable.”
The girls’ mother has attended parenting classes and has letters from her GP saying there was no evidence the children were being abused.
Cllr Greening said: “I would like an independent person – possibly someone from the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children – to be involved.”
The girls’ mother hopes to take her battle for the return of her children to the High Court.
She said: “I love my children and I want them back. I’m a good mother and I can care for them.”
Councillor Ursula Woolley, Lib Dem executive member for children and young people, said: “I’m not going to comment on individual cases relating to young people and their families in the media. It’s not appropriate. ”I know council officers are in discussion with all the people involved about how we can continue to support the children and the family.”
