‘They’re making mugs of us all’
Lib Dems spent £140,000 on rebranding after taking over Town Hall – including £900 on cups!
ISLINGTON Council is accused this week of spending more than £140,000 on an image makeover, including almost £1,000 on branded mugs.
The figures, revealed to Islington Labour councillors, show that since the council rebranded in January of this year, the money has been spent on putting new signs in buildings and on vehicles.
The cost includes £906 on mugs with the new council design. Other expenditure includes over £76,000 on new signs for council buildings, with the new Town Hall sign costing £1,741.
The extensive rebranding took place just four years after the last council’s own image makeover.
Labour councillor Richard Greening said: “This is a waste of Islington taxpayers’ money. The Lib Dems are so obsessed with flashy spin and public relations gimmicks that they are happy to fritter away huge amounts of cash to convince residents to vote for them.
“I understand that the council has to replace old signs and equipment, but I hope they are not seriously expecting us to believe that it’s normal to spend almost a hundred and fifty thousand pounds over half a year?”
However, Lib Dem councillor Terry Stacy, the deputy leader of the council, said it was misleading to suggest money was spent on an image makeover without explaining in full what has happened.
He added: “We are replacing letter-headed paper, forms and business cards with a fresher council design when old stocks run out. When we need to replace our vans with new ones, they will also have the new look.
“Some of our signs were changed to meet the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act, for example, the ones in the Town Hall now include information in Braille. Other signs had to be replaced because they were vandalised, removed without out knowledge, or the information on them was simply out of date. Since we had to replace these signs, it made sense to give them our fresher look.” |
