Parking wardens to go ‘softly’

PARKING enforcement giant NCP has renewed its contract with Islington Council after fighting off competition from five other companies.
The firm is being paid £5.7 million to administer all services, including ticketing and removals.
Council bosses insist they are saving money and it is a better deal than when NCP first signed with the borough in 2003.
But last night (Thursday) officers were unable to find out how much the saving was or the price of the original contract.
This time around, out go the clauses demanding NCP clamp a certain number of vehicles every month.
In come softly-softly £25 “time and trouble” payments for motorists incorrectly ticketed.
Although there are also no targets for the number of tickets issued, an Argos voucher incentive scheme for parking attendants who issue accurate tickets will continue.
Councillor Lucy Watt, Islington’s parking supremo, said: “When it comes to parking enforcement, people think it is common sense to reward good behaviour and fewer mistakes, rather than on the number of tickets issued and that’s what we’ve done.”
