We lead the way
• COUNCILLOR Richard Greening crows about supposed new government money for housing (Homes are on the way, August 3).
What he conspicuously failed to mention is that the government has only put forward a green paper on housing.
A green paper is a very early consultation document inviting views on the issue. This doesn’t equate to a promise of funding. It barely qualifies as an announcement.
Even if they were to take the ideas in the green paper forward it isn’t clear how this money would come down to Islington, and it could take years before it becomes a reality.
Islington’s Lib Dem council, on the other hand, sympathises with the need for more affordable homes, and is already doing real, hard work on this issue.
Last year, more than 800 families got new affordable homes in our communities. In the last two years we’ve built more than Hackney, Camden, Haringey and Westminster councils put together.
We have announced plans to build new council housing without being able to get a single penny of help from the government, and without running the council into Labour-style debts.
We are way out in front of our neighbouring boroughs on building new homes and we are waiting for central government to catch up.
But it is hard work and there are no easy fixes.
