Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 7 September 2007

Beware of ‘stress tests’

• I UNDERWENT a mixture of emotions when I saw scientologists evangelising outside Angel Tube station at the weekend.
In some ways scientology is amusing – after all, it is hard not to find funny the scientologist belief that an intergalactic dictator called Xenu brought people to Earth 75 million years ago.
Scientologist devotee Tom Cruise’s eccentric behaviour is also entertaining.
However, these scientologists
irritated me, as they were not advertising the fact that they were scientologists to the public (they were offering free “stress tests” to passers-by, as is the organisation’s normal tactic).
There is nothing remotely funny about scientology’s bizarre and offensive views on psychiatry and the Holocaust.
Many have accused scientology of being a cult and it certainly seems to prey on vulnerable people. I hope they had no success in persuading the people of Islington to join their cause.
