Festival celebrates campaigner’s work
MORRIS dancers and Kurdish folk musicians are among attractions at the 21st annual Gillespie Park Community Festival on Sunday, writes Alexandra King. The festival at the Highbury nature reserve will be opened by Labour MP Jeremy Corbyn.
It will celebrate the work and life of Margot Sreberny, who died earlier this year. A founder of Finsbury Park Action Group and Finsbury Park Partnership, she was awarded an MBE for her services to the community.
The festival programme includes drumming workshops, West African storytelling, environmental arts and crafts and face painting. Members of Islington Nature Conservation Team will take visitors round the nature reserve.
Pat Tuson, a joint organiser of this year’s festival, said: “This really is something the whole community looks forward to. It’s a fantastic day enjoyed by the whole family.”
