Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 21 September 2007

The great land grab

• SHEILA Moberly says: “Safety and protection of Palestinian children are the responsibility of the Palestinians” (Children are victims, September 14).
There is no way children can be protected from Israelis on a killing spree. Eight hundred dead children since 2000 attest to this.
She goes on: “There is no legal or moral basis for the continued attacks by the terrorists.”
If people came from another continent and kicked the English into Wales and Scotland, and established a state, would the English not have the right to fight to regain their country? Would the alien invaders be rightfully entitled to torture and murder English people if they did so? This is the position of the Palestinians.
The Israelis are intent on taking as much territory as they can get away with. They have already annexed East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights (illegally).
They care not a jot for human life if it is not Jewish.

• MOLLY McConville quite rightly points out that Palestinian children are victims. However, no amount of information will convince her that those children are victims of an ideological/educational programme that teaches hatred of Israel, or that the Palestinian leadership bears any responsibility.
The political radicalisation of Palestinian youngsters in the Gaza/West Bank cannot be compared to gun crimes in the suburbs of Liverpool. Youngsters recruited from families loyal to Hamas and other heavily-armed militias can be used as couriers, spies/lookouts, decoys, cover, bombers and foot soldiers.
Without a political solution those children will continue to be put on the front-line of hostilities. It is outrageous that the cynical use of youngsters for political aims is not condemned enough/more by those in positions of authority and education.
