The FRU in all its glory
Firefighters welcome July 7 rescue unit
A rescue unit similar to those used following the July 7 bombings in 2005 is to be based at Clerkenwell fire station.
The Fire Rescue Unit (FRU) is equipped with heavy lifting, winching, cutting and pulling tools as well as a portable electrical generator. It will join the existing fleet of vehicles at Clerkenwell, one of six stations in London to get the specialist vehicles, bringing the total in the capital to 16.
FRU crews are trained to handle road and rail accidents, chemical spills and collapsed buildings.
