Lib Dems ‘in denial’ over waste dumping

ISLINGTON’S Lib Dems have been accused of being “in denial” over controversial claims that recycled waste was dumped in Indonesia.
Labour councillor Wally Burgess, who chaired a review into the council’s waste strategy, made the claim after learning that the ruling party is still refusing to accept claims made in a BBC documentary in 2005 that the waste was found in Jakarta.
He told the Tribune that, although the rubbish is no longer sent to the Far East, following a decision to cease business with Grosvenor Waste Management, this did not mean it had never happened.
He said: “It looks as if it really did happen in spite of the denials but everything’s moved on. As far as we know it did happen but there’s a different company in charge now.
“The Lib Dems are still in denial. If they hadn’t been so much in denial then the public would probably have trusted them.”
Lib Dem environment chief Councillor Lucy Watt said: “Labour and the Green Party have been misleading the public for so long over this that they have undermined residents’ trust in recycling.
“If that meant that people have not recycled as a result and more waste has gone to landfill, their unfounded claims did real harm. Now trust can finally be restored.”
In February this year Grosvenor Management pleaded guilty to illegally exporting unsorted waste destined for developing countries in south east Asia.
