Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 16 November 2007

Windmill challenge

• WITH great fanfare, the Liberal Democrats have opened a “green advice centre” in Upper Street, Islington.
As the Lib Dems stood back while the local Citizens Advice Bureau closed, people might have thought the council’s priority would be to set up or support a replacement that could also help people with advice on issues that matter: employment and tenants’ disputes, nationality and residence issues, access to jobs and training.
They are spending £3 million of our money via their “green fund” on empty gestures like mini-windmills. None of it is available for sensible, much greener measures like helping people insulate their homes: this would save more CO2 emissions and help people cut their household energy bills.
I challenge the Lib Dem council to tell us how much CO2 its windmills will save and how that would compare with £3 million spent on home insulation. I bet it doesn’t have the facts to justify its policy.
Cllr Phil Kelly
Labour, Finsbury Park ward
