Edwardians return for library’s overdue birthday party
DRESSED in Edwardian costumes, staff at Islington’s Central Library have celebrated its centenary.
Four birthday parties have been held for the library in Fieldway Crescent, Holloway – among them an old-fashioned music hall event attended by Islington mayor Barbara Smith.
Lib Dem leisure chief Councillor Ruth Polling said: “The library is much more than a book store. It has been an important part of our community for 100 years now.”
The opening of the library in 1907 was celebrated by 300 guests. It was the largest municipal library of its time, before suffering bomb damage in the Second World War. Its Great Hall was restored last year.
