Where is leadership?
• THE deputy leader of the council has written a bad-tempered letter attacking Labour about the absence of a Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) in Islington, the third poorest borough in the capital. I thought that when you were in control of a council you had a responsibility to show leadership and make a difference.
Instead, we have had the typical response from the Liberal Democrats – “not our fault”, the CAB closed itself. Whatever the reason for a failed service, people expect their councillors to take a leadership role and fix the problem, not be defensive and attack others.
Isn’t the real issue that the Lib Dems are the highest-paid councillors in the country. It is difficult for them to understand what life is like for people in this borough who live on £6,000 a year, who have found themselves in debt, who have difficulties in paying bills or who live in overcrowded accommodation.
There is a desperate need for advice services and it is the role of the council to ensure they are provided.
This cavalier attitude to those most in need shows how greedy, arrogant and out of touch our council really is.
