Safe place for refugees
• CONSIDERING the climate surrounding issues of immigration, I am writing about our charity, the Refugee Therapy Centre, founded in 1999 by myself and by Dr Josephine Klein.
We offer therapeutic support for refugees and asylum seekers in 21 languages, giving priority to children, adolescents and their families. Ours is a service which is in its infancy and is still unique in this country. The people we serve have endured debilitating human rights violations and multiple losses resulting in immeasurable psychological stress. We provide a safe space in which they can feel empowered to deal with their psychological difficulties, rediscover their abilities and rebuild their confidence to become active members of society.
