Hunt for clues in drinker’s murder

Police believe estate man was killed during fight

DETECTIVES have been scouring a Newington Green housing estate in the hunt for clues which may give vital information about a murder of a man last week.
Darren Williams, who lived in Besant Court, Newington Green Road, was taken to hospital with head injuries just before midnight on Tuesday last week but was pronounced dead soon after.
It is believed he had been involved in a fight.
Two men have been arrested, one of whom has been released on bail until February, while no further action is being taken against the other.
Scant details are emerging about the 42-year-old, who was found dead in a friend’s flat in Besant Court.
Neighbours and nearby shopkeepers said he was a well-known face in the area, who enjoyed drinking with friends in other flats in the block.
One neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: “You hear so many rumours. I know he used to liked a drink.
“I used to see him in the lift but I didn’t know him.”
Ilhami Arslan from the off-licence opposite the block, said: “He would come in here sometimes to buy bottles of White Ace. He was very happy, joking. He was a very nice person.”
A member of staff at the nearby Weavers Arms pub said: “He was a regular.
“He used to come in around lunch time for a couple of pints of Stella. He was just your average Joe.
“I think he was from the north. He seemed to be friendly, I never had any trouble with him.
“He did all his drinking indoors but you would see him going up and down the street with a can in his hand.”
A shopkeeper at Costcutters on Newington Green Road said: “He used to come in and buy six cans of Super Skol every day.”
A Met Police spokesman said: “A post-mortem was held at St Pancras mortuary on December 5. The cause of death has yet to be established. We are still awaiting toxicology tests.”
A 39-year-old man was released on bail until February 15 and a 42-year-old man has been released with no plans for further action.
Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact the Incident room at Hendon on 020 8358 0200 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
