Students from Islington Arts and Media School serve up some Christmas cheer
Consider yourself at home...

ELDERLY residents were treated to an afternoon of Christmas cheer last week when pupils cooked up a festive feast before performing the Dickens favourite Oliver.

The students from Islington Arts and Media School’s after school cookery club whipped up a banquet of fresh salmon, turkey and beef, as well as 10 different gourmet salads, Christmas cake and fruit punch.
More than 70 pensioners poured out of minibuses brought by Age Concern Islington and Care UK, who look after some of Islington’s care homes, to take part in the feast.
After they were fully indulged – to a musical accompaniment from group Music for People – they were taken to the school’s theatre where 40 students sang their hearts out in a production of the musical Oliver!
Volunteer Joe Hagland, 72, said: “The performance was a sheer joy to watch. I, and many others, saw the other side to these well-behaved children and their talents, which they expressed so well to the audience.”
Ashley Grey, who organises community events at the school, said: “The pupils prepared the most amazing meal and volunteers from Standard Chartered Bank helped serve the food. They said the food was first class. It was all freshly cooked – I suppose they are used to food from day centres.
“The whole thing is for the residents to see a different side to the students. My job is to put the school at the heart of the community and this is a wonderful opportunity for us to open our doors.”
