West side story
• THE Upper Street Association strongly supports Islington Council’s proposal to close the west side of Highbury Corner gyratory (option A). It’s a real chance to improve Highbury Corner.
As part of this project, the relocation of the post office to new purpose-built premises on the north side of Highbury Corner is warmly applauded. Not only does it finally get rid of the current ugly building that was given just “temporary” planning permission in the 1960s and then never removed, but it also finally creates something to replace the World War II “bomb damaged” site on the north side.
We hope that Transport for London (TfL) and Islington Council will take the opportunity for an imaginative design on this prime location.
Currently, it is planned to allow taxis and cycles as well as buses on the closed west-side arm. While some of the taxis will be needed to drop people off at the station it is likely that most will purely be using it as a shortcut on their journey north. To ensure that the west side is also safe for pedestrians and that the central island is easily accessible even to those with young children or to the aged, we ask Islington Council to consider either mirroring the arrangement at Angel and not allowing taxis or allowing them only when dropping off passengers.

• JUDGING by letters and articles in the Tribune and from talking to other associations, there appears to be a growing consensus that closure of the west side of Highbury Corner (option A) is the best option.
Consequently, we were delighted when Councillor James Kempton confirmed that Transport for London and Islington Council have found a way of implementing option A without cutting into Compton Terrace Gardens or harming the tree.
Thank you to everyone who has helped with the campaign. We think there is a real opportunity to create something special. When finalising the plans we hope TfL and our council will give particular thought to ways of reducing the overall traffic volumes.
