Need some Christmas presence?
CHRISTMAS shoppers will have extra protection from crime after a dedicated team of officers was deployed to patrol the busiest areas of the borough on Friday. The force has begun a borough-wide operation to help residents, businesses and visitors have a safe and enjoyable Christmas.
Operation Christmas Presence will combine all aspects of policing to enable police to respond to alcohol-related crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour during Christmas and New Year.
Acting Chief Inspector Steve Riley said: “The festive season is traditionally a busy time for police everywhere and Islington is no different. “We want all our residents, businesses and visitors to have a safe and enjoyable time this year. We will be promoting our message of stay out of trouble, look after your property and don’t drink and drive.”
He added: “We have deployed a mix of uniformed and plain-clothed officers across the borough between now and January 6. “They will be conducting operations against those who spoil the festivities for others. We will be in transport hubs, shopping areas, residential areas and pubs and clubs. “Visitors are always welcome in Islington but we will not tolerate those who are here to commit crime and act in an anti-social manner. “These types of people will be at the forefront of our activity.”
Officers are appealing to the public to stay out of trouble, look out for loved ones and property and not to drink and drive.
Extra patrols have been tasked to patrol the borough and Safer Neighbourhood Teams will be focusing on retail, backed up by extra officers, a mobile police station and CCTV vans.
A new Neighbourhood Support Team will provide additional assistance when required.
The Proactive Crime Unit, together with the Angel and Nag’s Head Town Centre teams, will look after retail crime and offences relating to property.
The borough’s Licensing Team will be visiting Islington’s pubs and clubs and the Alcohol Task Force will work with door staff at licensed premises to reduce tension and disorder.
