Eighth most deprived area (but that’s an improvement)

ISLINGTON is the eighth most deprived area in the country, according to newly-published statistics.
But it’s not all bad news – this year’s Indices of Deprivation show Islington has climbed six places since 2004 when it was placed second.
The figures reveal that Islington has seen a consistent fall in levels of deprivation.
The indices rank the borough for income, employment, health deprivation and disability, education, skills and training, barriers to housing and services, crime and living environment.
The statistics show Islington is the only borough in London to have improved on all measures set by the government.
Lib Dem council leader Councillor James Kempton said: “Islington is changing for the better, though it remains an overwhelmingly poor area of London. I’m pleased to see that levels of deprivation are falling, which bucks the trend elsewhere in the capital.
“We’re clearly doing the right things and heading in the right direction. But much more remains to be done.”
He added: “I want every child growing up in our borough to have the life chances that are only available to the richest families at the moment. This is significant progress, but we’re not resting on our laurels.”
