Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 28 December 2007

If you want your private patch, move to a suburb

• I DO not approve of selfish “associations” representing only one road and pursuing the interests of that small group against those of everyone else.
Two or three years ago the Duncan Terrace “Association” gave their orders to the Angel Association, which has members from St Peter’s ward, and Islington branch of Living Streets, a national organisation whose members they wanted to “monitor” the shrubs in the public gardens in front of their houses in New River Gardens. They were, of course, turned down by each as they cannot be ordered about like servants.
I believe there were 36 participants in the “consultation” and I speculate that most of them live in Duncan Terrace. They really must accept that they live in a much-used area next to three busy roads with houses that face the wrong way for any sun, no matter how many trees are removed, and backing onto the now-empty (for four years) Royal Bank of Scotland “headquarters” building, which we were all against from the beginning.
Jill Nicholls (whom I’ve never met) rather gives herself away in admitting that “volunteers” from Duncan Terrace had done some “trimming and cleaning up” (Battle lines drawn over garden walk, November 30).
Strange that the shrubs and small trees are completely absent from quite a large area in front of their houses and I have found that council workmen do a very good job of clearing litter from public areas and can be left to it.
I am glad to hear that colourful shrubs will be planted but why was there a need to dig up healthy lilacs, orange blossom and honeysuckle in the first place? Surely, the money would be better spent replacing the 75 broken railings and painting the fencing for the first time ever.
The Tribune article represented my views and those of non-Duncan Terrace residents I have spoken to very well on the whole. A friend who has lived facing the gardens for 37 years says there has been a heartening absence of urban misdemeanors there, whereas she has seen people urinating in alleys off Oxford Street. Does that mean that all the stores and offices there need to be pulled down?
By the way, wouldn’t Goswell Road Island be a good position for a public toilet? I suggest that those who want exclusivity should move to a suburb where they can have their own private patch.
