Waiting for new school
• I WOULD like to congratulate Ashmount Parents and Teachers Association (PTA) for a wonderful winter fair.
It was an exciting event for the children and raised hundreds of pounds for the school. The fair was supported by many stallholders.
Well done, to the PTA for organising yet another high-profile event for families in our lovely leafy school, which is at the heart of its community.
It would be great if the same level of enthusiasm and energy was shown by Islington Council when it comes to the future of the school. There are plans to build a new Ashmount School but parents have not heard for months any update on these plans.
In fact, there has been a wall of silence from the Lib Dem council on this ambitious project. In this climate of lack of leadership from the council, neighbouring Coleridge Primary School is attracting far too many Islington parents.
Are the Lib Dems taking the fight to Haringey education bosses to tell them “hands off our families”? The current uncertainty seems to be translating into falling rolls at the school. The former Lib Dem council leader said we would have a new school by autumn 2008. What has happened to this vision? Lib Dems, you have promised much, now you must deliver.
