HIV services restructured
SUPPORT services for patients with HIV and Aids will be transferred to three centres from next week. The current iCare centre in St Albans Place, Angel, will cease to provide HIV and Aids support from Monday, when three community care centres in Vorley Road, Archway; Drayton Park; and Calshot Street, King’s Cross, will take over.
St Albans Place will remain open, but will specialise in other services. The change was brought about after a consultation of 200 people last November suggested residents would prefer more local services.
A network of local area teams will operate from three community care centres which will gain expertise and specialist knowledge in working with people with HIV/Aids and a range of long-term physical disabilities.
Health and adult social care chief Councillor John Gilbert said: “It’s change for the better for our HIV/Aids clients. Instead of having to travel from the four corners of the borough to St Albans Place for their care, we are pushing the service out to them. Cases of HIV/Aids are on the rise across the capital and in Islington – local demand for services is growing.”
The changes maintain close links with children’s services in recognition of the large number of HIV positive parents with children. They also make the council’s approach to HIV social work more consistent with its approach to social care for people with long term and serious conditions.
