Last chance to have a say on gyratory
ONLY days are left to make your views known on the future of Highbury Corner. Options drawn up for the gyratory system could involve removing the western or northern arms of the roundabout, and turning them into pedestrian areas.
Deadline for responses to a public consultation is Monday.
One option involved axing a much-loved tree, but Transport for London backtracked on this proposal last month after Lib Dem council leader James Kempton wrote to Mayor of London Ken Livingstone demanding that it be saved.
Proposed improvements to the roundabout and surrounding areas are aimed at making changing between bus and rail quicker and safer. Increased numbers of passengers are expected when the East London line is extended to Highbury and Islington station in 2011.
The proposals for the Corner are subject to planning permission and funding being found.
Views are invited on three options: Option A: closure of the western side of the roundabout to private vehicles. It would remain open to buses, taxis, cyclists and pedestrians to create a shared area of public space next to the station.
Option B: the northern side would be shut to private vehicles but open to buses, taxis, cyclists and pedestrians.
Option C: existing traffic arrangements would remain and a public space created in front of the station.
