West Side Story, at Sadler’s Wells from July 22-August 31
West Side Story, at Sadler’s Wells from July 22-August 31
Something’s coming, and something good!

SADLER’S Wells chief executive and artistic director Alistair Spalding could be forgiven for singing a refrain from the musical West Side Story this week.
The “something coming, something good” line from the show summed up his feelings about hosting the new, critically acclaimed production of the musical in July. With tickets already going well, it is expected to be a massive sell-out.
On Tuesday, Mr Spalding launched the Rosebery Avenue theatre’s new season, which will include everything from hip-hop to dance routines from China, Taiwan, Cuba, Argentina and Japan.
“It’s going to be a good year for Sadler’s,” Mr Spalding said. “There’s huge interest in dance these days, thanks to TV programmes like Strictly Come Dancing.
“But the aim is to bring more people from Islington to our performances. We are part of the community and prices for performances can be as cheap as £10.”
On May 3-5, the Bank Holiday weekend, the theatre is again staging a three-day hip-hop festival. The Breakin’ Convention was described by critics last year as “high energy” and a “giant blast of fresh air...”
Other highlights include Havana Rakatan, featuring “sexy, spontaneous rumba to the slick footwork of the cha-cha-cha”, a Chinese dance festival and the “spectacular and breathtaking” Peony Pavilion.
West Side Story, celebrating its 50th anniversary, arrives from Paris in July, and has already had the phone lines humming. Mr Spalding said: “There were 3,000 people per day ringing up for tickets. It was as big as Arsenal.”
The theatre’s own charity, Sadler’s Connect, is being supported by Islington’s Lib Dem Mayor Councillor Barbara Smith during her year in office.
The charity organises weekly dance workshops and occasional theatre trips for toddlers, schoolchildren and the elderly.
