Angel crime drops as police hit streets
‘Great news for businesses and their customers’
CRIME continues to be cut at Angel, according to figures from police this week.
They show there were 12 per cent fewer offences committed in December, compared with the same period in 2006.
At Christmas, there were 40 per cent fewer muggings and almost 20 per cent fewer thefts of wallets, bags and phones from busy pubs and restaurants in the Business Improvement District (Bid), which covers Upper Street, Chapel Market, Camden Passage and around the N1 Centre.
Break-ins and thefts from cars parked in the area dropped by 62 per cent.
Angel Bid director Christine Lovett said: “Again, we are pleased to see the highly-visible presence of the police team funded by Bid really making a difference to the area.
“At Christmas there are more shoppers, more people about, many are distracted, and so there are more opportunities for crime – the fact that crime levels overall at the Angel continue to fall is great news for businesses, their customers and everyone using the area.”
Bid, in partnership with Islington police and Islington Council, recently received the Borough Commander’s commendation for dedicated work rate, which has seen 98 per cent of arrests leading to prosecutions.
Chief Inspector Jane Johnson said: “We are seeing the huge benefits of a small police team dedicated to the Angel, which, with its vibrant shopping area and night-time economy, is a challenging place.”
