Anything goes in Finsbury as the generations mix to enjoy the finer points of foxtrot
PENSIONERS tripped the light fantastic as they displayed their expertise to younger generations in a tea dance revival at Finsbury Town Hall on Sunday.
In scenes resembling a big family wedding, older couples showed younger visitors the finer points of the foxtrot, waltz, cha cha cha, and tango to music from the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s.
Some came in costume, others in more casual gear, and some brought their children to enjoy the tea, cakes and dancing at the afternoon tea dance organised by the Ragroof Theatre Company.
Members of the company gave lessons and put on their own show during the breaks for refreshments.
Lucy Benson, 40, who lives in Essex Road, brought her 77-year-old father to the dance.
She said: “My dad absolutely loves it. It’s totally brilliant, completely inter- generational, like being at a wedding. Lots of young people have started doing it. The older people have something to show, they are the experts, and it’s lovely to see pretty young girls dancing with older men. It very much feels like anything goes.”
DJ Ivan Fabrega, who is a member of Ragroof, said: “We were very inspired by partner-dancing and felt it was very important to keep it alive. “It’s only the older generation that mainly does partner-dancing. We felt we should put on a dance not only for the older generation but for the younger crowd too. There’s an amazing atmosphere, it feels like a proper community event.”
The next tea dance is at Finsbury Town Hall on Sunday March 9, from 2pm to 5pm.
The Town Hall is also holding a Valentine’s Barn Dance on Saturday February 16.
Organised by Cut A Shine, the event will feature “barn dating”, where visitors will be encouraged to ask strangers to dance.
