Patient found dead had hidden heart condition

A FORMER Ministry of Defence chef died at a mental health unit from a previously undiagnosed heart condition, an inquest ruled on Tuesday.
Sudanese-born Adween Amiel, 41, who lived at York Way Court estate in Copenhagen Street, Islington, came to England in 1990 and had been in and out of mental health wards since 1995 for bipolar affected disorder, a manic depressive illness.
He was admitted to Highgate Mental Health Centre, in Dartmouth Park Hill, in June last year and died a month later.
Support worker Claude Yappo, who gave Mr Amiel a sleep-inducing injection and put him to bed at 6.40pm on July 19 last year, was the last person to see him alive.
Mr Amiel was discovered lying on his back, with white froth around his mouth, at 2.30am the following day when staff nurse Sharon Mushanga conducted routine checks. He is believed to have been dead at least an hour.
Pathologist Dr Freddy Patel, who carried out an autopsy, concluded that Mr Amiel died from heart failure due to a previously undiagnosed condition. His report stated that Mr Amiel’s heart was markedly enlarged, its muscle wall congested and there was excess fluid in his lungs.
In a report read to the St Pancras inquest, psychiatrist Dr Praveen Kumar said Mr Amiel had a record of “making threats of a physical and sexual nature and damaging public property”.
Verdict: Natural causes.
