Shoe designers’ protest booted out

TWO of Britain’s most famous shoe designers have failed to prevent an Iranian restaurant opening below their Islington home.
Terry and Liz de Havilland interrupted preparations for London Fashion Week to object to plans for Shandis restaurant on the ground floor of the Grade II-listed building in Upper Street where they live.
They complained that the restaurant’s late hours would spoil their quality of life. The restaurant will be in a former coffee shop, which was not open in the evening.
Mr and Mrs de Havilland argued that they had never had to endure noise from the coffee shop after 4pm. “The proposed dining area is situated inches below our main living area and if the premises were to be open as a restaurant/bar/club the noise it would generate would seriously impact on our lives,” they protested
Originally, owner Ebrahim Talari wanted to open as late as 4am at weekends but, after learning of objections from neighbours, he asked to be allowed to serve alcohol only until 11pm Mondays to Thursday and 11.30pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
This was granted at a meeting of Islington’s licensing panel at the Town Hall on Monday.
Speaking after the hearing, Mr Talari said: “When I first spoke to the council about a licence I didn’t have any experience about asking for opening hours. They said I can ask for whatever hours I wish. So I did. But when I saw the reaction of the neighbours I reduced the hours.”
