Rose, our inspiration
• ON behalf of Islington Pensioners’ Forum, I send this warmly admiring tribute to your centenarian columnist, Rose Hacker, whose death you announced last week.
I first heard Rose Hacker speaking at a meeting of conscientious objectors held yearly in Tavistock Square. I was struck by her clear-headed arguments for peace and delighted by her vivacity.
I hoped to invite her to join our forum, whose aims are in line with her own idealism and continuous work for people in need, but could not since she did not live in our borough.
Rose would surely have been glad to know that her example and influence do not end with her death, but will continue to inspire others, especially the elderly.
Many people would appreciate it if the Tribune and her many friends would collect and publish her articles and other writings, with a foreword outlining her life and innumerable activities, plus a portrait and illustrations of her sculptures.
