School to become centre for maths
ST Aloysius College in Archway is to become a specialist mathematics and computing school, it was announced this week.
It is the first Islington school to be awarded this status and follows a successful Ofsted report in November 2006 and its best ever GCSE results in 2007.
Last year, 61 per cent of pupils achieved A*-C grades at GCSE level.
Deputy head Danny Coyle said: “This attainment of special status will enable us to further develop the improvements made by the school in the past five years. “We’re aiming to become one of the top schools in north London.”
Specialist status will allow the boys’ school in Hornsey Lane to strengthen its links with the community. Courses in maths and computing will be offered to businesses, and plans to provide classes for non-clinical staff at Whittington Hospital in Archway are under way.
Lib Dem executive member for children and young people, Councillor Ursula Woolley said: “It’s an exciting time for St Aloysius.”
