School’s Pink rockers meet Floyd star
PINK Floyd drummer Nick Mason jammed with pupils at Bridge School on Friday when he dropped in to open a new music room.
The rock icon enjoyed a performance from the school’s own band Skirts before treating staff, pupils and special guests to an early-morning performance.
Mr Mason, 64, who kept away from any Floyd tracks, was almost upstaged by the school’s star drummer Henoch Lebonza Makila, 14, as the two duetted for the crowd.
Henoch, who is autistic, managed to keep hold of his drumsticks, which is more than Mr Mason did, raising a laugh from pupils when one stick slipped out of his fingers onto the school hall floor.
Mr Mason was visiting the secondary department of the school, on Carleton Road, Holloway, after being introduced to the Bridge – a school for children with special needs and disabilities – by a friend who has a child there.
After the performance, he said: “It was incredible, fantastic, great fun. I normally expect to get a little rehearsal time but I was shown straight to the drums this time.”
The audience erupted into applause following the show and Mr Mason then moved on to open the school’s new music room, funded by a £20,000 donation from law firm Cadwalader, Wickersham and Taft.
He was also shown round a mock flat, which is where students who may go on to live independently, learn the skills necessary to survive on their own.
Headteacher Penny Barratt said: “Our students really enjoyed saying thank you to Cadwalader for the support they have given us in funding music equipment and drumming lessons.
“They had a fantastic time jamming with Nick Mason to demonstrate their skills and the equipment.
“Music allows our students to develop confidence, independence and interaction skills and they definitely demonstrated these.” |
