Turnmills nightclub is all set for its last dance

‘We’ve had some truly legendary parties,’ says owner

CLUBBERS will have the last dance next month when legendary nightclub Turnmills closes its doors after more than 23 years and 3,000 nights of partying.
Owner Danny Newman has spoken to the Tribune of his recollections of life in Turnmill Street, since his father first took over the building in Clerkenwell, when weekends were a “ghost-town” 23 years ago.
Turnmills has announced the dates for its final weekend, just two months after the Tribune revealed it is closing to make way for a block of shops and offices.
But although the club’s management warned in December “watch this space” when asked if the club was moving, a spokesman said this week Turnmills was “closing forever”, adding: “As a company we’ll be doing events in other venues but we’re not opening up in another building.”
Mr Newman, who grew up in Islington, said: “When we first moved to Clerkenwell, it was very different to how it is today. Back in the late 80s it was pretty much a ghost town at the weekends. Now it’s quite the opposite, with a bar or venue every 100 metres. I was 11 when my dad first got the space, so it holds some wonderful memories for me. It’s been an amazing environment to grow up in. We have been lucky enough to have put on some of the biggest DJs in the world and thrown some truly legendary parties.”
He said the venue opened in Turnmill Street because at the time it was out of the way but in a good location, adding: “The main attraction was the venue. It was exactly what we were looking for – a unique underground space and a blank canvas.
“It’s a great area and I’m pleased to see it at the forefront of the London music scene, and proud we had a hand in putting it on the map.”
But, Mr Newman said, things had changed dramatically over the years: “The area is absolutely buzzing at the moment. When we first moved in I think we were only one of five licensed buildings in the close proximity, now there’s 20 times that. It’s very trendy but is also a very historical part of London. We have the best bars, the best hotels, the best clubs and some great restaurants.”
A full weekend of dancing and DJs is planned for Easter (March 21 to 23) after which the club’s life in Turnmill Street will be no more.
A list of high-profile DJs reflecting the club’s long life at Turnmill Street have been lined up for the celebrations, although details have only been released for Good Friday’s line-up so far.
Some of the world’s most famous DJs, including Judge Jules and Tall Paul, will be joining many more big names at the last Gallery night on March 21.
Saturday is the final Heavenly Get Together, which pays tribute to the electronic parties through the ages – Heavenly Social, Headstart and Together – while Sunday will be The Last Dance.
Tickets are limited to four per person and are being sold in advance only.
