A little help for elderly
• AS the older people’s champion on Islington Council I am all too familiar with the issues raised by the pensioners talking about the financial difficulties facing older people (Heat or eat? The dilemma facing pensioners living on £87 a week, February 29).
The cost of living is always rising. Council tax, as George Durack rightly said, is a particular burden on single people, elderly people and those who are struggling with the high cost of living.
That’s why I’m glad Islington is having one of the lowest council tax increases in London. At 2.5 per cent, it is below inflation. To put that in perspective, the rise in the state pension, while not nearly enough to cover the increased costs of living, will be 3.4 per cent.

• Thank you for the item about pensioner poverty and for portraying the efforts of Alfie Caretta, Joe Harris and George Durack in particular.
With his committee members, volunteers and Angela Sinclair, George works ceaselessly to advise and inform members of Islington Pensioners Forum about health issues, activities for the elderly and how to get various kinds of help, as well as taking part in lobbying our MP to try to raise the pension.
