Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 7 March 2008

Fat Christ, free speech

• THE anti-“Fat Christ” protesters can surely not be serious when they claim that Catholics are a “persecuted minority in this country” (Catholics protest that Fat Christ play ‘mocks God’, February 29).
Considering the genuine examples of human rights abuses and political and religious oppression taking place around the world, such a claim would be offensive were it not so ridiculous.
It is depressing that posters for the play have been removed from the Tube because of the possibility that they might upset those with ultra-sensitive and rather humourless religious outlooks.
We should stand up for freedom of speech and expression. All this news coverage has simply made me more determined to see the play to discover what all the fuss is about.
Jack Graves

• AS one of the protesters, I feel that your article will have helped our poor efforts to uphold Our Lord’s divine honour.
