Villa fan hurt in scuffle as Eduardo chants rile rivals
TWO men have been arrested and released on bail after a football fan sustained serious head injuries at Arsenal’s Emirates stadium on Saturday.
The Aston Villa fan fell down a flight of steps after a scuffle with Arsenal supporters in the stadium’s upper tier, an area exclusively designated for home supporters.
The 45-year-old man was taken to hospital and remains in a serious condition, although his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
A police spokeswoman said: “Two men aged 42 and 23 have been arrested in connection with the incident. They have now been bailed to return on a date in April pending further inquiries.”
The atmosphere in the stadium had become tense as Aston Villa fans angered home supporters with chants mocking the shocking injury sustained by Arsenal striker Eduardo Da Silva in a match at Birmingham the previous week.
A dozen arrests were made as trouble flared outside the stadium after the match.
Paul Matz, of Arsenal Independent Supporters Association, said: “The chants about Eduardo were reprehensible.”
