John Hegley entertains pupils.
Poet back before young audience
HIGHBURY’S own poet in residence, John Hegley, delighted schoolchildren at Islington South Library on Monday.
In an hour-long poetry workshop, pupils from St Mary’s C of E Primary in Islington took part in morris dancing and showed their skill at handkerchief design. “One of the reasons I’m doing this is because I’m local – one has to make an effort in the community,” said Mr Hegley. “I’m a big supporter of libraries. They’re great public spaces, but to some extent they’re under-used. That’s why it’s important to encourage people into libraries.”
He added: “And as I started off in children’s theatre, I don’t want to lose touch with it.”
