Trim will take years off Charlie
FORMER Highbury builder Charlie Travers, 57, hasn’t been without his full bushy beard for more than 40 years.
Now generations of white and greying growth will be ceremoniously shaved off on Sunday night – along with his head of hair – in aid of a hospice
charity.
The event is being held at the Auld Triangle pub in St Thomas Road, Finsbury Park, at 6pm. His daughter Diane will be wielding the clippers and the razor .
Married with five grown up children and 11 grand children, Irish-born Charlie has already been pledged hundreds of pounds in sponsorship by friends and customers at the pub.
The proceeds will all go to the St Jospeh’s hospice in Hackney, famous for its work with terminally ill patients. “I was a bit worse for wear when I agreed to do it,” Charlie said. “But I’ve got to go through with it now. Anyway, it’s all for a good cause.”
Sponsors can put money over the bar between now and Sunday or come along on the night.
Landlord and owner of the Auld Triangle, Martin Joyce, said he hoped as many as possible would support the event.
Mr Joyce appeared in this paper recently with a plan to sell off the pub and build flats.
He said: “All those who say they want me to keep the pub should come along and give Charlie their support and sponsorship.”
