‘She’s sorely missed’: Mother of four died after being hit by uninsured rider
AN uninsured scooter rider has been jailed after crashing into a mother-of-two and attempting to flee, an inquest heard yesterday (Thursday).
Iris Kamiel, 46, a housing officer from Tottenham, died in the Whittington Hospital in Highgate, three days after the fatal collision in Upper Tollington Park Road.
Raymond Winston Anderson-Fearon, 26, of Lancaster Road in Finsbury Park, was riding his brother’s scooter while disqualified and without insurance.
Ms Kamiel had been visiting friends at a street party in Victoria Terrace on July 7 last year with her partner, Desrie Scott, a social worker.
Ms Scott was standing a little behind her partner, between two parked cars, waiting to cross the road.
Ms Scott told the court: “We both looked to the left to see if there was oncoming traffic. All I remember was that Iris was hit by a bike. At the time I had my hands in her back pocket and Iris was hit and thrown in the air. It just happened so quick.”
Attending the scene, Sergeant Robert Stevenson, of Haringey police, noticed the scooter rider pushing the bike away and shouted at him to stop.
Mr Anderson-Fearon told the sergeant: “She just stepped out. I was just riding. I was on the road and she stepped out.”
He was sentenced to six months in prison at Haringey Magistrates Court on March 18 on charges of failing to stop at the scene of an accident, driving while disqualified and for driving without insurance.
Collisions investigator Adrian Cousins told the inquest at St Pancras Coroner’s Court that on the basis of his calculations, deduced through analysing the skid marks on the road and through various witness statements, that the driver was travelling well below the speed limit (between 17mph and 24mph in a 30mph zone).
PC Cousins concluded that Mr Anderson-Fearon, who was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, was not able to brake in time to avoid the collision.
Giving a verdict of accidental death, Coroner Dr Andrew Reid concluded that Ms Kamiel died as a result of a severe head injury sustained when she hit the ground seven metres from the point of impact.
He added: “As they crossed the road they stepped into the path of a motor scooter.”
Outside the court, the father of Ms Kamiel’s children, Anthony Skeete, 50, who also lives in Tottenham, said: “It’s tough dealing with kids missing their mother and having to hear them crying and crying.”
He added: “She’s really sorely missed.” |
