Let’s slap a fine on this parking contractor
• LAST week I witnessed another travesty from the contractor which operates Islington’s controlled parking. A contractor working for Islington Council parked illegally within a Camden resident’s bay before crossing the road in Dartmouth Park Hill to empty the Islington parking meter of cash on the opposite side of the road.
He did this despite there being several available metered parking spaces in which he could have parked legally. Having done so, he left without checking if the meter was working, or had any tickets left to print.
It did not, as myself and several other motorists soon discovered. The meter took our money and failed to issue tickets to display in our windscreens.
I called the contractor, to be advised the operative should have checked that it was working, and also advised that, despite the meter not working, and, despite taking our money, we would be fined if we did not move our cars.
We were innocent, whereas the contractor was guilty of a breach of its duty of care. Why is it not fined for this shabby and irresponsible behaviour?
Conspiracy theorists can draw their own conclusions. The council can identify the operative. The incident took place on Thursday, March 27, at 8.44am. Hopefully, it will confirm, through the pages of the Tribune, what action it is willing to take.
