Classroom onslaught
• I WAS pleased to hear that the National Union of Teachers has called for a ban on army recruitment in schools. I was recently somewhat shocked that the army had been to talk to my daughter’s class – a Year 8 group with children aged 12 or 13 – at an Islington school.
Apparently, they were there to talk about “conflict resolution”. You couldn’t make it up, given they illegally invaded and occupied Iraq, where they have created nothing but conflict.
However, they did not talk about their role in Iraq or, indeed, Afghanistan but instead about Sierra Leone, where there is little scrutiny about the army’s involvement. The attempt was clearly aimed at giving a positive and distorted impression of life in the army to these children. The NUT has my full support in this campaign.
