Pensioner dies in road tragedy
A PENSIONER died in an accident with a motorcycle at lunchtime on Sunday, despite attempts by members of the public to save him. William Goddard, 81, who lived in John Kennedy Court in Newington Green Road with his wife, Joan, was crossing the junction of St Paul’s and Clephane Road in Canonbury at 1.45pm when the motorbike was in collision with the retired painter and decorator.
Newsagent, Taylan Er, 18, who works at his family shop on St Paul’s Road heard the crash.
Mr Er, who knows two girls who witnessed the collision, said: “One started crying and the other was shaking.”
A trainee paramedic stopped her car and tried to resuscitate Mr Goddard using heart compressions. “I saw him lying in the road and went over to help but there was nothing I could do for him. “People put a lot of effort in. It’s just a shame it didn’t work,” said Mr Er.
The motorcycle rider, a 35-year-old man, was taken by ambulance to The Royal London Hospital and treated for minor head and leg injuries.
Neighbour, Cassia Chambers, 19, said when she moved into John Kennedy Court with her two young sons six months ago the Goddards helped her carry paints and shopping up the stairs. “He was very friendly, really good with the kids and so helpful,” she said. “The way he died is so tragic.”
