Students find work... in classroom

A HOLLOWAY college is offering women a route back to work by training as teaching assistants.
Islington mayor Barbara Smith dropped into Westminster Kingsway College, in Holloway Road, on Friday to award certificates to 12 students who have completed a training course. She said: “This is an excellent programme getting women back into employment in a sector that suits their needs.”
Student Karen Bernard said: “I found the course really rewarding. It has given me lots of confidence and the skills I needed to get back into work.”
Ms Bernard did her work placement at St John’s Primary School in Holloway where she is now volunteering.
She added: “The placement was great as I got to put my new skills into practice in the classroom. I have really enjoyed it and the support from the tutors was great.”
Janice Etheridge, head of the skills for life department at the college, said: “There is a demand for trained teaching assistants. Having completed their work placements in local schools, these candidates are in a good position to meet this need and find employment in the local area.”
