Church’s blessing
• I WRITE as a member of the congregation at Newington Green Unitarian Church, which featured on the front page of the Tribune (The church where you can’t marry, April 4).
We are an inclusive congregation and want to be able to welcome everyone equally. Suspending marriage services because gay couples are denied religious civil partnership services is just one example of how we want to be equally welcoming to all.
Many churches are still positively hostile to gay people, and most are only half-hearted in their support, treating gay relationships as inferior.
We will continue to welcome both gay and straight couples to our beautiful, 300-year-old church for blessings.
We would invite straight couples who want to support equality and religious freedom to consider having a blessing ceremony at Newington Green after their civil wedding, and similarly we would welcome gay couples for blessing ceremonies after their civil partnership registration.
It’s a fantastic and historic building with a history of radicalism and forward thinking, a lovely organ and a friendly and growing congregation.
