Children from schools in Islington with their rolled-up newspaper creations
Artists’ sculptures make news

ENTERPRISING youngsters turned old newspapers into sculptures, towers and chairs on Wednesday with the help of an old-fashioned, hand-cranked rolling machine.

Led by artist Darcy Turner, children at Islington Ecology Centre, Highbury, and the i-recycle centre, off Caledonian Road, got their hands dirty with newsprint as they turned the unwanted papers into works of art.
A spokesman for Islington Council said: “The children seemed amazed by what they could make out of old newspaper. And they got to show their creative flair by building things which looked interesting, but were functional at the same time.”
More workshops are planned at the i-recycle centre, an education facility which teaches children about the three Rs – reduce, reuse and recycle.
