Heritage celebration
• IF you go down to Mildmay ward today, you’ll be in for a continuing surprise. Newington Green, in the heart of the ward, has the oldest Unitarian church in London (300 years old this year) and the oldest inhabited terrace of houses in England (350 years old this year).
Along Mildmay Road, and tucked inside the rapidly-sought-after property in the Mayville estate, is a beautiful Victorian tram generating station.
This was rescued from dereliction in the 1970s by a feisty group of people now known as the Golden Oldies. The building, covered in trompe-l’oeil, became the community centre, and is used by our Mildmay Community Table Tennis Club (Wednesdays), Over Fifties, Golden Oldies and International Elderly (Tuesdays), children’s homework club (Wednesdays and Saturdays), and jazz and brass bands in the basement.
To celebrate the heritage of Newington Green, the Mayville Gardening Club has built a knot garden of herbs and vegetables based on an 18th century design. The garden club will maintain it throughout the celebratory year and review its positioning at the end of the year. The club meets on the last Tuesday in the month at 4-5.30pm in the community garden
