Murder charges give us hope, says victim’s brother
A MYSTERY killing which has haunted a Finsbury family for more than 20 years may be a step nearer solution.
Four men were remanded in custody this week charged with the murder of private detective Daniel Morgan, who was found lying in the car park of a south London pub with an axe embedded in his head 21 years ago.
The men charged were Mr Morgan’s former partner in a private inquiry agency, Jonathan Ress, 53, Glenn Vian, 49, his brother Garry, 47, and businessman James Cook, 53, all from south London.
Sidney Fillery, 61, a former police detective sergeant who worked on the initial inquiry, has been charged with perverting the course of justice.
Mr Morgan’s brother Alastair, 59, has led a campaign for justice from his Finsbury home for two decades.
He said this week: “It’s been a very long struggle. We’re hoping that things are finally beginning to unravel. Over the years you think ‘how much longer can I go on?’
“I’m hoping in the not too distant future we will be able to lay my brother to rest. Let’s hope the truth comes out.”
Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner John Yates has paid tribute to the Morgan family’s campaign for justice.
He said: “The one consistent theme throughout has been the astonishing determination of the Morgan family to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
“The current investigation has shown there are still people out there who have highly pertinent evidence about this case.
“The arrests demonstrate the Met’s continued determination to bring those responsible to justice.”
Mr Morgan, a 37-year-old father-of-two was attacked as he left the Golden Lion pub in Sydenham on March 10, 1987.
He was struck five times with an axe. His £900 Rolex was taken but £1,100 in his back pocket was left.
Six men were arrested on Monday – the result of witnesses, some from the criminal underworld, coming forward after years of silence.
The sixth arrested man, a 24-year-old serving Met officer, has been released on bail. |
